Last week Fleur went to visit the Enfield parent carers who have participated in the Healthy Parent Carers programme.
Enfield have been running the programme for over a year now. They run it online and have found the 6 week version is the most popular. One parent carer commented that it had helped them to ‘dial down and feel more chilled’. Another said that she now feels she is ‘coping as well as I can’. The programme helped them to ‘celebrate their successes’ as parent carers.
They are in the process of translating the resources into Somali and hope to start delivering the programme to a Somali group in the new year. We discussed the need for cultural concepts to be interpreted, rather than just translating the text verbatim. One afro-caribbean member stressed the need for parent carers to see ‘a facilitator who looks like me’.
